Why change the system?

Why change the system?

In 2014/15, 14 people died in Wales whilst waiting for an organ transplant, as a donor could not be found.

Very few people die in circumstances where organ donation is possible.

In 2014 31,439 people died in Wales. Around 250 of these died in a way that would have allowed them to become a potential organ donor. Last year (2014-15) only 72 people became organ donors.

So it’s important to make it as easy as possible for people who want to donate their organs to do so.

It is rare for families to be in the awful situation where their loved one could be a potential donor. Under the old system in 43% of cases where organ donation was possible, families said no to donation because they didn’t know whether their loved one wanted to be a donor. Make time to talk with your family about your organ donation decision.

Now the new system is in place, families know their loved one can opt out if they don’t want to be a donor. So, they can be reassured that they are carrying out the decision of their loved one.

The law will mean if you support organ donation but haven’t got around to signing the Organ Donor Register, you don’t need to.

Since 1 December 2015, if you haven’t registered a decision to be a donor (opted in) or not to be a donor (opted out) your consent could be deemed. This means you will be treated as having no objection to organ donation.

You can register an opt out decision online or by ringing 0300 123 23 23. Calls to this phone line will be answered by the NHS Blood and Transplant Service.

The new system will make everyone’s organ donation decision clearer and will also ease the difficult decision for families.
